Types of gynaecology scans
Pelvic ultrasound
- Transabdominal scan over the lower abdomen
- Useful for assessing uterus and ovaries
- Often combined with an internal scan for more detail
Transvaginal (internal) ultrasound
- High‑resolution views of uterus and ovaries
- Helpful for endometrial thickness and cavity assessment
- Detailed evaluation of fibroids, cysts and polyps
When an ultrasound can help
- Heavy, painful or irregular periods
- Pelvic pain, bloating or pressure
- Suspected fibroids, ovarian cysts or endometriosis
- Fertility assessment and cycle monitoring
- Postmenopausal bleeding or thickened lining
- Follow‑up of previous ultrasound findings
